The latest putting analysis software from Quintic keeps its eye firmly on the ball, writes Adrain Miledge.

Golfers like me are definitely not what the doctor would order, especially Dr Paul Hurrion, the putting guru. And not because his client list includes some fo the best golfers on the planet and he has no time for those who are somewhat, to put it politely, challanged when it comes to despatching the ball into the hole.

In search of the Perfect Putt

May 28th, 2011 | Quintic Ball Roll, Tuition

June 2011 Gi : Golf International Magazine www.golfinternationalmag.com

Following last month’s putting instruction featuring Dr Paul Hurrion’s work with Rory McIlroy, we focus on how the same coach’s Quintic Ball Roll putting analysis system is now guiding regular golfers – as well as tour stars – to the correct specifications and stroke. Dominic Pedler reports on the ultimate launch monitor for your putting.

“Putting is an art not a science,” claims Ben Crenshaw, which is all very well when you’re blessed with the perfect stroke of that particular two-time Masters champion. But for the rest of us – and that includes tour pros such as Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy – science is very much transforming our understanding of the mechanics of putting and the way both our stroke and our equipment influence the vital dynamics of the golf ball on its final journey. In the same way that conventional launch monitors such as TrackMan, Vector, FlightScope and Foresight GC2 have revolutionised the long game, so the equivalent technology for the more modest – but most used – club in the bag is now emerging as an essential part of the clubfitting process for golfers of all levels.

One session on the latest Quintic v2.4 system will dramatically alter the way you think about the very nature of putting: opening your eyes not only to obvious alignment issues but, more fundamentally, to the nuances of ball speed, spin, launch angle and the nature of true roll. Quintic does all this through a state-of-the-art camera which (operating at 260 frames-per-second) only needs to capture the movement of a specially marked golf ball over the first 12 inches of its journey for the software to impute all the clubfitter needs to know about your clubface contact and the resulting influence on the ball in terms of the roll and path of putt. While some of the parameters Hurrion himself summarises below can get rather techie in nature, it’s worth stressing that Quintic is emerging as a highly practical tool, in practice, both for coaches as a teaching aid and for clubfitters who can now match a player’s putter specification to their style of stroke far more swiftly and efficiently than ever before.

Following Gi’s visit to The Belfry to see the system in action, here is Hurrion’s instant guide to the putting parameters that the Quintic v2.4 measures and why they matter so much to your own putting game.

Under Armour announce new innovation ambassador for 2011…

May 1st, 2011 | Full Swing Biomechanics, Putting Biomechanics, Under Armour

Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE: UA), is pleased to announce that Dr Paul Hurrion will be working alongside the company in 2011 to develop the UA ArmourStability® line that hits stores in May.

Dr Paul Hurrion has gained international recognition in many sports, specialising in biomechanical, sporting and equipment analysis. This unique insight into the athletes at the very top of the game creates the perfect partnership to help Under Armour develop this innovative, game changing new product.

Lower back problems are one of the most common complaints health professionals hear from golfers. Though it may seem a relatively low stress sport, compression forces in the lumbar spine reach 8 times bodyweight during the golf swing * – not much less than measured in American football linemen hitting a blocking sled! These forces present a considerable injury risk for the golfer.

When asked why he liked the product, Dr Hurrion said, “Lower back supports have long been worn by athletes to try and prevent injury and improve performance in sports like cricket (fast bowlers), javelin throwing and weight lifting. The UA ArmourStability® top offers similar benefits to the lumbar supports worn in those sports. Firstly the top helps elevate muscle temperature which increases the metabolic rate, thus increasing muscular efficiency. This temperature increase also improves the suppleness and flexibility of the muscles which is key in reducing potential for injury and potentially allowing the golfer to create a larger ‘X-factor’ (Hip and Shoulder separation during the transition).”

He went on to say, “The Armour Stability top has compression panels positioned to help stabilise the musculature around the lumbar spine. These panels help to increase intra-abdominal pressure. Increased intra-abdominal pressure during movements that generate forces around the spine has been shown to be beneficial. The benefits are due to a spinal unloading effect allowing compressive forces on the spine to be reduced. Weightlifters have long tried to increase intra-abdominal pressure during heavy lifts as they feel it helps ‘stiffen’ the spine. This stabilising and unloading of the spine could help reduce the chance of a lower back injury during the golf swing.”

When asked to summarise the benefits in a golfing context, Dr Hurrion said, “This potential means that the UA ArmourStability® top could help golfers transfer energy stored during the backswing more effectively in the downswing and through impact leading to greater clubhead speed. In conclusion the UA ArmourStability® top reduces the injury risk to the lumbar spine during the golf swing as well as potentially enhancing performance through increasing flexibility and power transfer.”

What happens to a golf ball when it goes over a tiny pebble on the putting green?

April 5th, 2011 | PGA European Tour Golfers, Putting Biomechanics, Quintic Ball Roll

The above video is that of a European Tour player, putting on a 8ft putt. The putt was captured at 260fps through the Quintic Ball Roll Software. Please notice a tiny pebble at the 5″ position. Even at just 4mph ball speed, the ball clearly jumps into the air as it hits the pebble and then continues to bounce. The putt will most probably end up short of the hole after such a large bounce… The pebble has also been deflected of its intended path and at 8ft a putt, the Ball Roll software predicts to be missing on the right edge of the hole. There is also an increased amount of forward rotation at 5″ (from 300rpm to over 500rpm) as a result of the collision.

Many thanks to Matt Johns (London Putting Academy : www.londonputtingacademy.com) for the video. Matt uses Quintic Ball Roll as part of his GEL Fitting and teaching academy at Royal Blackheath Golf Club, Surrey. For more information on please visit www.quinticballroll.com & www.gelgolf.co.uk

Posture is the Key to Putting

March 28th, 2011 | LPGA, Tuition

Planet Golf - Golf International March/April 2011 p24 :
Putting with Dr Paul Hurrion
www.gelgolf.com

Standing correctly to the ball is the foundation of my putting instruction - get this right and the rest falls easily into place. Your goal at address is to establish a posture that allows your shoulders to rock in a pendulum motion without any need for excess hand action or other compensations which won’t hold up under pressure…

In the diagram above here, I have highlighted the key parameters I look for in the posture of a golfer at the set-up - in this case LGPA tour player Beatriz Recari. If the set-up is not correct, there will be unwelcome compensations within the stroke as a result. I am looking to create a consistent and repeatable putting action that enables you to start the ball on the line that you have read - every time and under pressure!

You’ve got to start somewhere!

March 16th, 2011 | Oliver Wilson, PGA European Tour Golfers

Congratulations to Oliver Wilson for his seven under 65 to win the low honours and the ’Payne Stewart Salver’ at this years Tavistock Cup. For Oli is was his debut representing his new club Lake Nona with team mates Graeme McDowell, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Retief Goosen and Henrik Stenson. The Tavistock Cup is a golf club championship with Isleworth and Lake Nona being joined by two new teams - the Albany Club from the Bahamas and Queenwood from the UK. The event boasts one of the best fields in golf, which is how the Tavistock Group are able to raise the millions of dollars they do each year for their Foundation.

ORLANDO, FL - MARCH 14: Oliver Wilson of England and the Lake Nona Club on the 16th green during the first day of the 2011 Tavistock Cup at Isleworth Golf Club on March 14, 2011 in Orlando, Florida.  (Photo by David Cannon/Getty Images)

It is great to see the hard work paying off with the swing and by closing out the tournament with a 3, 3, 3, 3 finish including holing out for an eagle 3 on the 17th. Hopefully, Oli can take lots of confidence from this back to Europe next week and keep on improving and continue this form on the European Tour in Spain.

Not the first professional win but it was a world class field and you’ve got to start somewhere! Congratulations once again from all at Quintic.

A new (and better?) putter-fitting system

March 7th, 2011 | PGA European Tour Golfers, PGA Tour, Putting Biomechanics, Quintic Ball Roll

Monday, March 7, 2011 : Golf Digest / Golf World

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/blogs/newstuff/2011/03/a-new-and-better-putter-fittin.html

Dr. Paul Hurrion is a sports biomechanist into whose putting expertise Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy have tapped. The rest of us can, too, provided we find a facility that has the Quintic Ball Roll Software and system that Hurrion has developed.

Here’s how the Quintic Ball Roll system differs from other putter-fitting software: “We’re tracking the golf ball,” said Jim MacKay, who heads Quintic’s U.S. operations. “Everyone else is tracking the golf club.”

The Quintic Ball Roll system is similar to a full-swing launch monitor, but was designed specifically for putting. It captures skid, backspin, roll, launch angle, bounce, ball speed, hook or slice sidespin, and the point at which true roll begins.

“The reason why it’s important to track the ball as opposed to the putter, you make adjustments based on what the ball is doing,” MacKay said.

Its sales pitch to retailers is simple. Have a golfer bring in his own putter, have him hit up to 10 putts on the system, then try other putters and find which works best for them based on the data collected.

The system works for fitting, instruction and even research and development. Ping and TaylorMade are among the equipment manufacturers employing the system on the latter front. Harrington is among the tour players who uses one at home, as does the LPGA’s Beatriz Recari, who won the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge as a rookie last year. Dr. Jim Suttie, who has two golf training centers and counts Loren Roberts among his students, has ordered one, MacKay said.

The cost of the system is $7,500, which features a Quintic 260 frames-per-second camera, a camera stand, calibration t-bar, light and template for marking golf balls, and the software.

“We’re really excited about what it is we’re doing,” MacKay said. “We think we’re pioneering what we’re doing. It will be a huge help to players and to manufacturers on how to build the putters. It’s a great research tool, a good fitting tool, a good coaching tool.”
