The following image is a slow motion video (2000fps) of a centre strike with a GEL ‘SEDO’ design. The GEL ‘Dr Paul Hurrion’ Signature Range incorporates the latest groove technology using a multi-layer aluminium insert that delivers great feel and exceptional feedback. The use of this technology creates instant forward roll on the golf ball, thus minimising the effect of skidding. Quintic has proved that the action of a golf ball during the first phase of the putt is the most crucial element to direct the ball towards the intended target, and hence why groove putters outperform all other putters.
My main aims when developing putting technique for any player are to work from a basis of:
1. Sound biomechanical principles – ‘fit the putter to the player!’
2. Working with the players own anatomy & biomechanics
3. Avoiding injury to the player along with long term development
My coaching philosophy is underpinned by the fact that the ball and putter collide for only 1 millisecond and therefore everything that comes before and after impact should be as biomechanically sound as possible (no manipulation!). A sound set up position and posture using the correct putter (length & lie) are crucial to allow the player to create a stroke with the best chance of sending the ball in the intended line with the right pace - consistently.
The Paul Hurrion signature range not only includes the latest GEL groove and insert technology, this allows weight to be positioned around the perimeter of the club head, thus creating a high moment of inertia (MOI). As a result of increased MOI, it increases the forgiveness of off-centre hits.
In essence my putter range encompasses the following;
* The thin, firm multi-layer aluminium insert enhances feel & gives exceptional feedback
* Groove technology creates immediate forward roll
* Perimeter weighting enhances the MOI, increasing forgiveness
* Optimal head weight, in order to eliminate the ‘hit’ at the moment of impact…

Hong Kong; GEL Golf has firmly established itself as the number one groove putter on Tour in Asia with GEL putters dominating the statistics on the Asian and China Tours over the last couple of months and consolidating its position at last week’s Tour events.
At the Indian Open on the Asian Tour which finished on Sunday (October 12), a total of 21 players had GEL putters in their bags in New Delhi ahead of groove putter rival Yes, who had 16 players in the field using their putters.
Whilst at the Omega Championship, the season-ending Tour Championship on the China Tour, GEL putters completely overshadowed all other putter brands with 27 players – over 25% of the field – choosing to use a GEL putter.
The news completes a breakthrough year for GEL Golf which has already celebrated three Tour victories around the world in the last 12 months; Bryan Saltus of the United States won the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open on the Asian Tour last December with his GEL Sapphire putter, Taiwanese Hsu Mong-nam secured victory in the Omega China Tour’s Shanghai Championship in May with a GEL Jade putter and in early September American Tom Stankowski captured the Canadian Tour Championship in Ontario using a GEL Emerald putter.
“Considering GEL Golf was only launched at the start of 2007, we are immensely proud of the incredible progress we have made with GEL Putters in the ultra-competitive golf market,” commented Alec Pettigrew, CEO of Hong Kong-based GEL Golf.
“With so many professionals now using GEL Putters on Tour, it proves that we have developed a good quality product that quite simply helps hole putts more often. Whilst we are 100% confident that groove and insert technology creates instant forward roll on the golf ball, thus reducing the unwelcome effects of skidding and giving a straighter, truer roll, the pros are now discovering this for themselves and relying on GEL Putters to improve their performance on tour. There is no greater endorsement for our product that this.”
One of golf’s most innovative technology manufacturers, GEL Golf uses horizontal precision-cut, aluminium inserts for a more responsive feel and enhanced sweet spot. Following feedback from Tour pros, GEL has made their putters larger, heavier and more balanced heads, encouraging an even smoother and more rhythmical putting stroke.
The original GEL Putter range launched in January 2007 at the PGA Golf Show in Orlando comprises of six models, namely the Emerald, Diamond, Sapphire, Jade, Opal and Ruby whilst the latest range, the GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range boasts four models; the Rego, Scindo, Sedo and Sedo II.
Dr Paul Hurrion, a leading sports biomechanists and a renown putting coach to a host of top European and Ryder Cup stars, combined over 10 years of research and development in biomechanics and putting with GEL’s groove and insert technology, to create the distinctive GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range.
To look at, GEL Putters are easily distinguishable using bright yellow and blue grips for men, and pink and blue grips for women, and electric blue and pink face inserts.

Biomechanics mastermind Dr Paul Hurrion reveals how to make a difference to your putting.
As vital putts start to drop for the European Ryder Cup team at Valhalla, Kentucky, tomorrow (Friday) no one will be watching the action more closely than Paul Hurrion, writes Graham Otway.
Based at Quintic, near Birmingham, Hurrion, a specialist in sports biomechanics, is the mastermind behind the putting techniques used by Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood.
One of the keys to turning Harrington into a player capable of winning three of the last five golfing majors has been to persuade the Irishman to switch to the left-handunder- right putting method.
But getting his pupils to develop the body posture and cut down excessive body movement in the putting stroke has turned Hurrion into one of the most sought-after short-game gurus in the UK.
Lack of movement is the key to successful putting, says Hurrion, who began his career as a sport scientist analysing fast bowlers in cricket.
“Keeping the head still is important,” he says. “Players should not look up until after the ball has been struck.
“When they take up their putting stance it’s also vital that the eyes are directly over the ball — it helps align the putter correctly and visualise the line on which a putt should be struck.”
Making sure the putter has been fitted correctly is important, too. At the time of address the club lies flat on the ground. “If the toe is in the air, the putter’s loft is altered and the ball will almost certainly drift to the left.”
Hurrion has begun to market his own range of GEL putters, which have been designed to marry up with the biomechanics of putting.
“But,” he says, “becoming successful on greens is very much down to the golfer and how much work they are prepared to put into the game.
“Putting should be part of a routine. For instance, by marking a club face with lipstick when practising, golfers can make sure they are hitting the ball with the same part of the putter face.
“Things like that make a difference — more than just turning up to play a round, hitting a few putts on the practice green and then expecting to hole everything.”

GEL (Groove Equipment Ltd) Golf has appointed Duncan Bagshaw as its European Tour representative to ensure that its GEL Putters are available for playing professionals to test on Tour week on week.
Prior to taking up his role at GEL, Bagshaw spent a week with renown putting coach and sports biomechanist Dr Paul Hurrion, who designed and launched the GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range in conjunction with GEL Golf earlier this year at the PGA Golf Show in Orlando and, more recently, at the London Golf Show in April 2008. Quintic software along with Quintic Ball Roll analysis software is key in demonstrating the effect of the putters on the ball roll. The Quintic software is available on the putting green for the golfers to try the putters… seeing is beliving!
“I am delighted with my appointment as GEL’s representative on the European Tour and look forward to introducing the Tour pros to the GEL putter, which I believe is the best putter on the market; it performs well and looks great to boot,” said Bagshaw, who once boasted a handicap of +1.
“The innovative groove and insert technology GEL uses in its putters ensures instant forward roll on the golf ball, reducing the unwelcome effects of skidding and giving a truer roll to putts, whilst the substantial aluminium insert increases the size of the sweet spot and enhances feel.”
The appointment of Bagshaw means that GEL Golf now has representation on the European, Canadian, Asian, Japanese and China Tours.
Back in September 2007, GEL appointed Caesar Bayliss as a full-time representative on the Asian Tour, which very soon produced results; American Bryan Saltus won the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open in December having exchanged his regular putter for a GEL Putter. GEL is now the number three putter brand on the Asian Tour.
In May this year, GEL celebrated its second tour win when Taiwan’s Hsu Mong-nam claimed victory at the Omega China Tour’s Shanghai Championship. The very same week, GEL became the top putter brand on the China Tour.
“At the European Open, my first event as the GEL European Tour representative, we received a great deal of interest from numerous pros and one player actually used our putter during the tournament – a great start as far as I am concerned,” enthused Bagshaw.
“I am confident that we can match the success the brand has experienced on the Asian and China Tours, and I am already looking forward to a GEL Putter securing our first European Tour title.”
Bagshaw has always been involved with golf and first picked up a golf club at the tender age of three. He went on to captain the Golf Team at Sheffield Hallam University where he studied Sports Science, later completing a work placement in the golf operations department at Gleneagles.

Duncan Bagshaw and Dr Paul Hurrion - Royal Birkdale

Dear Gel Golf
I recently won the putting competition at the London Golf Show sinking the 21 putts. I had my lesson with Dr Paul Hurrion and I really enjoyed it and have learnt a lot of new tips and techniques. He said that you wanted to know how my game has improved with the putter and how the lesson went. The first part of the lesson was to get my posture correct and balanced. Once I have achieved this, Paul could custom fit the putter for me. I chose the GEL SEDO II putter from Paul’s signiture range. The length is 33″, 72 degrees lie angle and has 3 degrees of loft. The ball roll video was amazing.
Over my first three rounds with the putter I have improved amazingly on the greens. On my first round I had 33 putts, on the second 30, and on the third 27. I have never felt more confident on the greens with this putter and nearly everything from within 8 feet seems to drop. I am even sinking putts from over 30 feet. I feel that putting is the most important part of your game, so a good putter is essential. In my opinion, this putter is fantastic! I know that my handicap is going to drop in the coming months thanks to my new Gel putter.
Thank you for the experience, I absolutely love the GEL SEDO II putter!

GEL Golf have joined forces with top sports biomechanist and putting coach Dr Paul Hurrion to design an impressive new range of putters.
The new GEL Paul Hurrion signature putter range incorporates the groove and insert technology of the standard GEL Groove Putter range along with 10 years of research and development by Hurrion into the art and science of putting.
Hurrion’s biomechanical analysis of putting has shown that the performance of a golf ball during the start of its roll is the most crucial part to send the golf ball accurately towards the hole. He explains:
“All the testing that has been undertaken on putters proves that grooved putter faces produce greater grip with the golf ball at the moment of impact, therefore enhancing a putter’s ability to produce the desired topspin roll on the golf ball,”
Despite the serious science behind these new wands, these are really cool looking putters with bright coloured inserts and funky grips and we can’t wait to put them to the test in our magazine putter special this summer!
There are four different models in the new Paul Hurrion Signature Range as follows:
SEDO putter (Smooth)
A heel-toe, weighted blade with a goose neck and slight offset. Loft 3.0 degrees. Lie 73 degrees. Standard shaft length: 32″ to 35″. 431 stainless steel material. (370gm head weight)
SEDO II putter (Smooth)
A heel-toe, weighted modified blade with a ‘crank-neck’ hosel and full shaft offset. Loft 3.0 degrees. Lie 73 degrees. Standard shaft length: 32″ to 35″. 431 stainless steel material. (380gm head weight)
SCINDO putter (Split / Separate)
A modified alignment, face-balanced blade, with an increased club head offers more weight and maximum forgiveness. A centre-shafted, no offset, cavity-back, blade-style head design. Loft 2.5 degrees. Lie 73 degrees. Standard shaft length: 32″ to 35″. 431 stainless steel material. (365 gram head weight)
REGO putter (Straight)
A modified alignment, face-balanced blade with an inline weighting, perimeter weighting with a centre shaft and no offset. Weight alignment arms create unique weight distribution within the putter face. Three-line alignment system squares the putter face to help focus the putter to the target. Loft 3.0 degrees. Lie 73 degrees. Standard shaft length: 32″ to 35″. 431 stainless steel material. (380gm head weight)
All four GEL Putters putter models cost £165 each and you can find your nearest retailer or buy online at www.gelgolf.co.uk

Sedo 2 Hurrion Putter: I bought a Sedo 2 at the London Golf Show 3 weeks ago and I cannot believe how much of a differce it has made to my putting. The contact with the ball is so crisp and the roll of the ball straight off the putter head has made judging distance so much easier. GEL’s slogan is ‘Believe in the Roll’ and you really can!!!! I advise EVERYONE to go and check them out because it is undoubtedly the best putter i have ever held
Agree with Oli1982, I bought a Rego centre shafted putter at LGS. I have a handicap of 3 and quite frankly never used a better putter yet. Weighting is slightly heavier than most putters but beatuifully balanced and gives a true roll to the ball. Spot on GEL, I will be recommeding to my mates!

Thank you to the hundreds of people who came to see GEL Golf over the weekend at Excel and we trust they all had a great time and that the children and adults enjoyed the free caps, the biscuits and even Claire’s truffles!
It was great to be there on the Friday, doing interviews and photographs. It was especially pleasing to see the response of the putters. The putting green was constantly busy… There was plenty of buzz as Lee Westwood opened the Show. Also congratulations to his stable mate and close friend Darren Clarke who finished 1st over the weekend in the BMW Asian Open at Shanghai. Robert-Jan Derksen finished second. It was great to see the two players going head to head over the last round.
Congratulations to the two daily winners Gregor Macintosh (Friday) and George Crow (Sunday) who both won new Paul Hurrion Signature Range putters and Saturday’s winner George Cummings, who won a putter and a private lesson with myself after a magnificent 21 continuous putts! (not sure how much work will be needed here!)
Look out for details of how the new range of putters on the new GEL Golf (UK) web-site in the coming months. Congratulations to Mrs L Andrews of Highgate who won a ladies Topaz putter in our prize draw.
Also keep a look out for our new GEL newsletter “In The Know”, and the web-site where we will post any pictures of you and any GEL putter out and about. The most unusual photo every month will win a prize. More people now “BELIEVE IN THE ROLL”. When will you join them “IN THE KNOW”?
We look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks to innovative groove putter company GEL Golf, visitors to this year’s London Golf Show will have a golden opportunity to glean instructional tips from Dr Paul Hurrion, putting coach to a number of European Tour and Ryder Cup stars.
While Hurrion will be at the show primarily to officially launch the GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range into the European market, he will also be on hand to host some exclusive teaching clinics on the GEL Golf Putting Green that will include a must-see putting seminar on the main stage on the first day of the show (Friday, April 25).
Designed in conjunction with GEL Golf, the GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range reflects more than 10 years of study and research by Hurrion into the art and science of putting while incorporating the latest from GEL’s Groove and Insert Technology. Most notably in the Hurrion Range, the size of the GEL multi-layer, grooved aluminium insert has been increased and refined by Hurrion, delivering even greater feel and feedback.
In addition, weight has been positioned around the perimeter of the club head creating a high moment of inertia (MOI), so increasing the forgiveness and creating truer roll.
Clive Wood, managing director of Assay Golf Limited, distributors of GEL Groove Putters in the UK and Ireland, said: “GEL Golf is delighted to be able to bring someone as well respected and highly thought of as Paul Hurrion to the London Golf Show.
“His combined knowledge of biomechanics and the putting stroke is second to none and, when amalgamated with the innovative technology in our GEL Groove Putters, will undoubtedly improve the putting success of any golfers who test out a GEL putter at the show.”
Throughout the show GEL Golf, the official putters of the London Golf Show, will be showcasing its new range of groove putters as well as highlighting to visitors the revolutionary GEL Groove and Insert Technology that is behind all of its putters.
The use of this innovative technology creates instant forward roll on the golf ball, thus reducing the effect of skidding whilst the brand’s use of unique precision-cut, grooved inserts in the putter face is designed to provide greater grip when the putter strikes the ball in order to promote a smoother, truer roll and so eliminate skidding.
Independent laboratory testing has shown that the more grip imparted on the ball at impact, the more top spin is generated. The result is a more accurate and consistent stroke, meaning simply that golfers hole more putts.
Wood added: “Overall, we are keen to promote the benefits of grooved putters because while people are increasingly aware of this technology, we need to spread the word more widely about what grooved putters actually do that non-grooved putters don’t.
“Given the number of strokes that putting can add to a round, it is a message that no golfer can afford to ignore.”
The original GEL Putter Range comprises six men’s putters - two of which come in ladies’ specifications - from £99.99 whilst the Paul Hurrion Signature range boasts four models (Scindo, Rego, Sedo and Sedo II) that are priced at £165. More information can be found at www.GELGolf.co.uk
All GEL Putters have been developed following feedback from tour professionals which has resulted in larger, heavier and beautifully balanced heads which again encourage a smoother and more rhythmical putting stroke. Every putter has a plated black SQ finish with an eye-catching electric blue grooved aluminium insert in the face. The putters come in a range of shaft lengths and a number of models are available for left-handed players.
Andy Barwell, managing director of the London Golf Show, said: “It is fantastic that GEL Golf is bringing along a putting coach of the calibre of Paul Hurrion.
“It will be a great opportunity for visitors to the show to benefit from exactly the same feedback and advice as the Tour professionals and will hopefully result in improved fortunes on the putting green.”

GEL Golf will showcase its new range of Groove Putters, the GEL Paul Hurrion Signature Range, to the UK golf market for the very first time at the London Golf Show from April 25 to 27 2008.
Designed by sports biomechanist and putting coach Dr Paul Hurrion in conjunction with GEL Golf, the new range incorporates the innovative groove and insert technology that defined the original GEL Groove Putter Range and reflects over 10 years of research and development by Hurrion into the art and science of putting.
Independent testing at Quintic Consultancy, has proved that the use of groove technology in putters creates instant forward roll on the golf ball, thus reducing the unwelcome effects of skidding and giving a truer roll.
Meanwhile Hurrion’s biomechanical analysis of putting has proved that the performance of a golf ball during the first portion of the roll is the most crucial element to direct the ball towards the intended target, ensuring therefore that grooved putters will always outperform all other putters.
In this latest range, GEL’s unique groove technology, using a firm, multi-layer aluminium insert over a larger area, has allowed Hurrion to position weight around the perimeter of the club head creating a high moment of inertia (MOI) so increasing the forgiveness and creating an even truer roll of the ball.
“Working with GEL Golf, I have designed the Paul Hurrion Signature Range of putters to help golfers enjoy the key benefits Tour players look for on the greens. That is, a putter designed with horizontal grooves to impart forward roll, peripheral-weighting that maximises the sweetspot across the putter face and heel-toe weighting to increase the MOI for improved resistance to twisting on off-centre hits,” explains Hurrion, who works with a host of European Tour and Ryder Cup players.
“Based on the biomechanical principles that I have studied, the new GEL range of putters creates stability at impact in the area of the game that matters most,” he concludes.
The result quite simply is that the Paul Hurrion Signature Range delivers great feel, exceptional feedback and creates immediate forward roll ensuring that good putts are rewarded.
GEL Golf, which introduced its first range of GEL groove putters in 2007, has produced four models in the Paul Hurrion Signature Range, namely the Sedo, Sedo II, Scindo and Rego, which retail at UK£165.
“All the independent testing that has been undertaken on putters proves that grooved putter faces produce greater grip with the golf ball at the moment of impact, therefore enhancing a putter’s ability to produce the desired topspin roll on the ball,” adds Alec Pettigrew, Managing Director of GEL (Groove Equipment Ltd).
“GEL has further improved groove technology by introducing horizontal, precision-cut grooves to generate an even better topspin roll and now that we have drawn on Paul’s scientific expertise for the Signature Range, I am confident that we have developed one of the best ever putter ranges on the market.
“Given the number of strokes that putting can add to a round of golf, and the beneficial effect that grooves can have on a player’s putting, the potential for grooved putters is enormous.”
Within a year of launching, GEL was proud to secure its first Tour winner. In December 2007, American Bryan Saltus won the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open after exchanging his regular putter for a GEL Putter. Asian Tour statistics showed that Saltus’ putting average prior to Cambodia had been 30.4 per round but using his GEL Putter that average plummeted to 28.5 putts per round.
The Paul Hurrion putters are all fitted with WINN grips and the distinctive electric blue inserts that did so much to differentiate GEL’s first range of grooved putters when they were first launched into the golf market in January 2007 at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.

The following article is a feature that appeared in the March 2008 Edition of SGB Golf (The European trade Magazine). The interview and article was written by Duncan Lennard, Editor of the magazine, during the 2008 PGA Orlando Trade Show.
——————————————————————–
Dr Paul Hurrion (pictured) of GEL Golf discusses his research into the science of putting – research that has led the likes of Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Henrik Stenson to his door. He also outlines how a mix of science and biomechanics has helped him fashion his first signature range of putters.
We are in the middle of a pulsating 2008 PGA Orlando Trade Show, however Dr Paul Hurrion’s mind is miles away, focused on a tranquil early-morning practice green,
soaked with dew. “We’ve all seen it,” he says. “You strike the putt across the green and it takes a while before the ball starts making a solid line in the dew. Before that the ball is airborne, hopping and skipping across the ground. At this point it can easily be deflected.
“We’re in the business of getting that solid line to start a lot closer to the ball’s address position.”
Hurrion’s new range of four GEL putters, constructed with the help of his Quintic computer system (www.quinticballroll.com) – essentially a launch monitor for putts – is designed to do just that. The most obvious design trait of his new range is the face grooves (GEL stands for Groove Equipment Limited), which are oriented upwards at an optimal yet undisclosed angle to impart forward spin on the ball. And while a putter with grooves might still sound as odd as a face-balanced wedge, to Hurrion it’s simple common sense.
“It’s exactly the same as grooves in a wedge,” he insists. “You wouldn’t dream of using a wedge without grooves. It’s just that with a wedge the grooves are to impart backspin. They’re at 90 degrees to the face, with much of the spin created through angle of attack. Our putter grooves are effectively smoothed upwards, reversed to created forward spin.”
Hurrion discounts the theory that forward spin can be created by angle of attack.
“One of the things the Quintic system showed us was just how briefly the ball is on the face during a putt. We are talking less than a millsecond; there is no compression of the ball at all. That’s very little time for the angle of attack to have much of an effect; plus those who try to putt low-to-high are always in danger of missing the putter’s sweetspot vertically; the sweetspot doesn’t just run from heel-to-toe, but up and down the face.”
