Padraig named PGA Player of the year

December 18th, 2008 | Padraig Harrington

Padraig has been named PGA player of the year. He is only the fourth player to win the British Open and PGA Championship in the same season. He is the first European player to win the PGA Tour award since it began in 1990.

“It has been a fantastic season individually out there, winning a couple of majors. At the time you win them, you certainly feel that nothing could compare to it. But to be honest, there is no greater accolade than to receive an award from your peers.”

“Because it’s the players, because it’s my peers, because they’re people that I care and am concerned about their opinions deeply, for them to choose me as their player of the year is very special,” Padraig said. “It compares equally to winning a major championship.”

Padraig was also named the European Tour Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. He also won the Irish PGA in 2008 for his 16th international victory.

Congratulations Padraig from all at Quintic.

MATCHING PERCEPTION WITH REALITY

Our laboratory at the Quintic facility here in Warwickshire is kitted out with the sort of gadgetry that wouldn’t look out of place in Q’s underground workshop. But for all the sophistication of the high-tech video reconnaissance equipment, a simple builder’s laser and trusty putting mirror are by far and away the most important gadgets that a golfer could wish for in terms of keeping his or her putting stroke in order.

I am not giving away any trade secrets when I tell you that the correct alignment of the eyes and the putter-face is vital in the process of developing and repeating the mechanics of a sound putting stroke. And yet it’s no exaggeration to say that upwards of 90% of the golfers who pass this way (most of them top amateurs and professionals) display fundamental flaws in their alignment that demand some sort of compensation in the stroke itself. In other words, they are simply not aiming the putter where they think they are. The simple procedure you see me demonstrating here is designed to confirm both the alignment of the putter-face and the position of the eye-line above the ball.

And if you are serious about improving your putting over the winter, then my advice is get yourself kitted out and follow these rules.

Get into the Groove

December 5th, 2008 | GEL Golf, Putting Biomechanics, Quintic Video Software

What makes the Gel Putter tick?
Malaysian Golf Diggest’s Patrick Ho spoke to key people from GEL Golf Ltd for an update.

Malaysian Golf Digest December 2008 : P108 -115

Have you noticed golfers using yellow and blue coloured putters? Chances are, they may be using the fastest growing groove putter currently in the bags of pros in Asia. The GEL putter was launched at the Orlando Golf Show in 2007. With only six models showcased at the show, it is surprising that nearly two years on, the new putter brand is already a winner at professional events.

On the Asian Tour, American Bryan Saltus broke through for his first win at the 2007 Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open with a Sapphire model. The ecstatic American told journalists: “My putting has been the winning formula this week. I had a good start with three birdies and my confidence grew after that. Quite simply, GEL has changed my life.” Saltus’ victory was soon followed by Hsu Mong-nam, who won the Omega China Tour’s Shanghai Championship in May with a Jade model, while in September, American Tom Stankowski lifted the Canadian Tour Chamiponship in Ontario with a GEL Emerald model.

Its growing popularity is a testament to its horizontal groove insert technology that significantly reduces the effects of skidding for a truer roll on the greens. Many touring pros have begun to turn to GEL putters in the hope of changing their fortunes for the better. In October, at the Hero Honda Open in India, GEL was ranked third on the putter count with 21 in play, against an established brand which had 43. At the Omega Championship in Beijing, it was the most used putter with 27 in play. Its nearest rival could only boast half that number.

Today, it has the services of putting expert Dr Paul Hurrion and it seems only a matter of time before GEL Putters become the choice of consumers worldwide. It sounds easy but an interview with the top man of GEL Golf and Hurrion revealed otherwise…
